Aung San Suu Kyi admits Rohingya crisis 'could have been handled better'”

A senior Myanmar official has confirmed that the country's leader, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, will not attend the UN General Assembly session beginning next week in NY.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has admitted Myanmar could have handled the Rohingya crisis better.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi addresses participants during the opening session of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said that Aung San Suu Kyi was mistaken in saying the case was handled in accordance with the "rule of law".

The journalists, sentenced to prison earlier this month, were investigating a massacre of members of the Rohingya minority in Inn Din village in Rakhine state, for which seven Myanmar soldiers were later convicted and sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Bangladesh on Tuesday urged the worldwide community to put more pressure on Myanmar to provide a permanent solution to the Rohingya refugee crisis and ensure their safe return.

"The case has been held in open court", Ms Suu Kyi said.

Speaking at a later news briefing, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Washington disagreed with numerous comments Suu Kyi had made and added that the journalists should be released immediately.

But she added that the two journalists "have every right to appeal the judgement and point out why the judgement is wrong if they consider it wrong".

"We have to be fair to all sides".

"Politics is politics", she said.

Aung San Suu Kyi said that Myanmar is prepared to take those who fled back, but their return has been complicated by the fact that two governments are involved.

Rohingya refugee girls cross a makeshift bamboo bridge at Kutupalong refugee camp, where they have been living amid uncertainty over their future after they fled Myanmar to escape violence a year ago, in Bangladesh. The rule of law was upheld and the pair will have a chance to appeal, she said.

The latest crisis erupted in August 2017 when a brutal military crackdown was launched in far-western Rakhine state in response to a Rohingya militant group attacking more than 30 police posts.

Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) said in a statement Tuesday that it supports the efforts of Solicitor Daniel Robert Taylor in pursuing efforts to prosecute Aung San Suu Kyi for various crimes under global criminal law.

According to the report, laws on telecommunications, official secrets, unlawful association, electronic transactions, import-export and aircraft have been used against journalists in a number of cases. She refused, however, to criticise the Burmese security forces, whose commanders face calls by the United Nations to be prosecuted for genocide. "On all these counts, the trial of the Reuters journalists failed the test".

It says a number of ill-defined laws are used in Myanmar to exert control over independent journalists and to deter them from reporting on critical issues.
