Hurricane Florence dumping ‘epic amounts of rainfall’ on Carolinas

Hurricane Florence dumping ‘epic amounts of rainfall’ on Carolinas”

North Carolina's governor Roy Cooper said: "Know that water is rising fast everywhere, even in places that don't typically flood".

Zooming out to the full projection, shown above, the core of the storm is slated to enter North Carolina around 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. Many people didn't leave.

That kind of scenario is likely to repeat itself all over communities in Eastern North Carolina, as swollen rivers flood towns and the pouring rain adds to the misery. As of Saturday afternoon, about 752,000 people remained without power in North Carolina, along with 119,000 in SC.

He said that on Saturday morning, the floodwaters around his home had dropped, leaving a multitude of trees and other debris in their wake. Electricity remained out for much of the city, with power lines lying across many roads like wet strands of spaghetti. He said the gust was the strongest recorded in Wilmington since 1958.

The center of the hurricane´s eye came ashore at about 7:15 a. m. EDT (1115 GMT) near Wrightsville Beach close to Wilmington, with sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Hurricane Florence on Friday claimed its first fatalities, including a mother and her baby, as the monster storm walloped the US East Coast and parked over the Carolinas, threatening days of torrential rain and severe flooding.

Heavy rain and flooding are expected to continue at least through the weekend, and local officials said hundreds in areas hit by Florence still need rescue. Fort Bragg, a sprawling U.S. Army base, is just west of Fayetteville.

North Carolina's governor's office said a third person was killed while plugging in a generator.

In one piece of good news, authorities said 16 wild ponies of hurricane-struck Ocracoke Island, located off the North Carolina coast, were safe.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence broke a North Carolina rainfall record that had stood for nearly 20 years: Preliminary reports showed Swansboro got more than 30 inches and counting, obliterating the mark set in 1999, when Hurricane Floyd dropped just over 24 inches on the state.

Heavy rains and storm surge created destructive flooding of several feet throughout the Carolina coast. But Florence, a Category 1 when it hit, already had pounded coastal areas for hours. It was downgraded to Category 1 before coming ashore on Friday near Wilmington.

The state's governor, Roy Cooper, underscored the message: "I can not overstate it: Floodwaters are rising, and if you aren't watching for them, you are risking your life".

More than 20,000 people were in 157 shelters in North Carolina, with almost 6,000 in SC shelters, officials said.

The Navy sent ships to sea Monday from the Hampton Roads area to escape effects of Hurricane Florence.

SC authorities said law enforcement officers were guarding against looting in evacuated areas, while Wilmington set a curfew on Saturday evening in response to looting in one area.
