Nationwide test of emergency alert system will be sent to your phone

Nationwide test of emergency alert system will be sent to your phone”

Most cell phones capable of connecting to the internet will display a "Presidential Alert" at 2:18 p.m. EDT on September 20, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced this week. It is part of a nationwide test by the Federal Emergency Management Agency of Wireless Emergency Alerts systems to assess its effectiveness.

All major wireless firms and more than 100 mobile carriers are participating in the new Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) program that allows for presidential alerts, FEMA wrote in a Thursday statement.

You don't need to take any action for the test.

Former President Barack Obama signed a law in 2016 requiring FEMA to create a system that lets USA presidents send cellphone alerts regarding public safety issues like natural disasters and "terrorism". Users can't opt out of the WEA test, according to FEMA. "This will be the first national WEA test".

Federal officials previously announced that the government has a system for sending messages to all cellphone users in the event of a serious weather situation or other emergency.

Dubbed the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) the test will go out to all phones connected to those carriers and will be broadcast by cell phone towers for 30 minutes beginning at 2:18 p.m. EDT.

The Wireless Emergency Alert system message test is being carried out by FEMA in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, FEMA said in a statement posted on its website Thursday.

The test is meant to ensure public safety officials have the methods and systems that will deliver urgent alerts and warnings to the public in times of an emergency or disaster. The systems allows the president the "communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency". If for some reason there's interference with Thursday's test, a backup is scheduled for October 3.

It will interrupt programming for about one minute, FEMA said.

FEMA officials told CNN on Saturday morning that they are still planning to conduct the test this week.

You've probably already heard of the Emergency Alert System, which sends a national public warning via radio and television in the event of an emergency and conducts periodic tests.
