Kavanaugh and accuser to testify in Senate

President Donald Trump urged senators to hear from both Judge Brett Kavanaugh and the woman who accused him of sexual assault before the Senate Judiciary Committee votes whether to recommend the nominee for confirmation to a seat on the Supreme Court.

Seeing an opening, some Democrats are surely wondering if they can delay votes on Kavanaugh's nomination at least until after the midterm elections.

"The FBI does not make any judgment about the credibility or significance of any allegation", Flores said in the statement. "The goal of a background investigation is to determine whether the nominee could pose a risk to the national security of the United States". The allegation does not involve any potential federal crime.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said his panel would hold a hearing next Monday with both Kavanaugh and Ford "to provide ample transparency" and "give these recent allegations a full airing". She says Kavanaugh groped her over her clothes, grinded his body against hers and tried to take off her one-piece swimsuit and the outfit she wore over it. "The FBI is not doing any further investigation".

"I support Mrs. Ford's decision to share her story, and now that she has, it is in the hands of the FBI to conduct an investigation". "She should testify under oath and she should do it on Capitol Hill, but that's up to the Senate Judiciary Committee". Blasey Ford asked for confidentiality, and the allegation was not made public - until this past weekend.

In a bombshell interview in The Washington Post on Sunday, Ford detailed an alleged attack on her committed by Kavanaugh when the two were high school students in suburban Maryland.

Meanwhile, Kavanaugh was at the White House for a second straight day.

"This is a completely false allegation", he said.

"I find her allegations worth looking into professionally", Leahy said in the interview. "I hope the attacks and shaming of her will stop and this will be treated with the seriousness it deserves". Jeff Flake of Arizona, a Judiciary Committee member who has clashed bitterly with Trump and is retiring from the Senate.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, also said in a tweet by a CNN reporter that the vote to consider Kavanaugh might have to be delayed: "This is not something that came up during the hearings". Monday's planned hearing seems to be following a similar pattern.

When Brett Kavanaugh faced only an unnamed accuser with a vague story about something that allegedly happened almost four decades ago, when he was at Georgetown Prep, it was clear that the Republicans had no intention of slowing down the train.

On Morning Edition Tuesday, Leahy, D-Vt., suggested that another man who was allegedly in the room at the time of the encounter be called before the committee. Now [Feinstein has] talked to [Blasey Ford] and got her to agree to come forward publicly. In the letter, Ford said she had received medical treatment after the assault, adding that "it is upsetting to discuss sexual assault and its repercussions, yet I felt guilty and compelled as a citizen about the idea of not saying anything".

"It's been hard for Blasey Ford over the years, [Blasey Ford] told [Rebecca] White, because the judge's name would come up as 'a super powerful guy and he might be a contender for a Supreme Court position one day'".

However, neither Ford nor Katz have heard from any lawmakers.

Senate leaders, under pressure from fellow Republicans who wanted a fuller, open examination of the allegations, announced the move late on Monday. In both cases, the allegations became public only after the nominees went through their initial confirmation hearings. "I have never done anything like what the accuser describes-to her or to anyone", Kavanaugh said.

Grassley also couldn't answer whether each senator will get one or two rounds of questions.

In response to a question from Hewitt, Grassley did not rule out the possibility that a female lawyer could be tapped to ask questions of Ford from the Republican side. Overall, there are now 23 women in the Senate: 17 Democrats and six Republicans. "It is a political dialogue on a very, very painful subject for a lot of people".

Still, Conway and other Republicans are going out of their way to say they want Ford and Kavanaugh to be heard.
