Ticketmaster Has Its Own Secret 'Scalping Program,' Canadian Journalists Report”

The suit comes on the heels of a recent media report showing that Ticketmaster has been profiting off of ticket resales, despite speaking out against the practice. He believes total damages to Canadians could be upwards of $100 M.

In a statement. Ticketmaster told CBS News, "It is categorically untrue that Ticketmaster has any program in place to enable re-sellers to acquire large volumes of tickets at the expense of consumers".

Interesting reporting, but not particularly ground-breaking - we all know that Ticketmaster uses dynamic pricing, just like hotels and the airline industry, to scale tickets and drive yield.

Ticketmaster can then make money off fees from the initial ticket sale and the resold scalped ticket.

Resellers who buy their tickets via Ticketmaster have a financial incentive to use TradeDesk.

Utilizing proprietary software called TradeDesk, users could manipulate prices and amounts of tickets on secondary markets at will, creating a mostly-unregulated marketplace for tickets.

The US-company has been accused of working with the scalpers and allowing them to use fake account to beat the multiple ticket limit.

One man was caught on camera saying the biggest broker had "grabbed around 5 million tickets a day".

Journalists from CBC News and the Toronto Star published their findings on Wednesday, detailing a secret scalping program run by Ticketmaster.

"As long as there is an imbalance between supply and demand in live event tickets, there will inevitably be a secondary market".

Prior to publication of the report, the Star and CBC send a list of questions to Ticketmaster detailing the investigation's findings.

Through the platform, scalpers are able to resell their tickets through a platform that gives a cut of the resale fee back to the company.

"I have brokers that have literally a couple of hundred accounts", a Ticketmaster sales representative told the reporters, according to CBC. In a statement, the company's Catherine Martin didn't answer specific questions and instead defended the basic concept of ticket resales. The general terms and conditions also say, "Use of automated means to purchase tickets is strictly prohibited". When the undercover reporter asks whether Ticketmaster will be "policing our accounts" for violations of its policy, the rep explains "No".

In a blog post responding to the Times' allegations, Ticketmaster president Jared Smith wrote that the company's success "is not the result of any unfair advantages resulting from being a part of Live Nation Entertainment", but a result of its parent company's investments into its products, alluding to the complaints as having been filed by AEG, its chief competition.
