Pliskova upsets Osaka to win Tokyo final

Pliskova upsets Osaka to win Tokyo final”

It was the Japanese player who appeared the more tired, however, and Osaka, who had not dropped a set during the tournament, hit a series of unforced errors and showed none of the poise and power that secured her a first Grand Slam title.

Osaka's workload had to be managed indeed as she has been playing for a while now.

"It was important for me to play two sets and not go three sets - also for recovery for the next tournament - and I needed a match like this", Pliskova, fourth seed, said after the win.

At the 2016 US Open, unseeded players Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka both put on noteworthy performances: Wozniacki, whose year had been hampered by injuries that caused her ranking to plummet, left NY back in the top 30 after a run to the semifinals.

"I was just trying to serve well, to mix the speed a little bit (and) play lots to her backhand. But the future is bright for her and congrats to her for an incredible few weeks".

In Pliskova's 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory against Donna Vekic in the last four she becomes the fifth player of this season to register 40 main draw match wins. The world No. 8 was soon a set up after unleashing another brutal drive catching No. 7 Osaka flat-footed.

Osaka, the runner-up in Tokyo two years ago, climbed to seventh in the rankings after becoming Japan's first grand slam singles champion but she looked lost for ideas against Pliskova.

Pliskova broke Osaka for a second time to go up 5-4 and then hammered her sixth ace to secure her 11th career title.

"I didn't want to try to overpower her because I think she has more power than me", the 26-year-old added. Osaka whacked her racket against her sneakers in anger at her wastefulness and, as the strain began to show, she called for her coach Sascha Bajin before groaning: "I feel so stressed out".

"If she's on, it would've been nearly impossible to beat her", added Osaka. "I really wanted to get to the final".

Pliskova then served out the match with a love game, sealing the victory with an ace.

"I think Donna was playing well and she's beaten a lot of tough players this tournament".

In her postgame press conference, Pliskova said she had been wary of Osaka's power and had tailored a game plan aimed at neutralizing the U.S. Open champion's unsafe forehand.

In contrast, a tearful Osaka could barely bring herself to speak at the trophy presentation.

"I've literally never felt more exhausted in my entire life", said the 20-year-old, who plans to take some time off.
