Prithvi Shaw, 18, Becomes Youngest Indian To Score Test Century On Debut”

Shaw is also the second youngest Indian ever to score a Test century after Sachin Tendulkar who cracked a ton at 17 years and 107 days in 1990 vs England in Manchester. However, the debutant Prithvi Shaw took matters into his own hands as he smashed a scintillating century.

However, there was some early celebration for the Windies when Gabriel struck Rahul in front with the sixth ball of the match with just three runs on the board.

It meant a Test debut for the inexperienced 22-year-old Sherman Lewis and also saw Keemo Paul, at age 20 and with a single Test to his name, having to share the new ball with speedster Shannon Gabriel. Before that, India and West Indies will face each other in a two-match Test series, starting October 4 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.

Rahane, meanwhile, had faced 92 balls and struck five fours and looked a safe bet for a half-century before edging a cut at part-time off-spinner Roston Chase to be caught at the wicket, with the close in sight.

Shaw (134 off 154) and Cheteshwar Pujara (86 off 130) laid the foundation for a big score with a 206-run partnership after the early loss of K L Rahul (0).

WICKET! Prithvi Shaw is dismissed for 134 runs as Devendra Bishoo gets the crucial wicket.

The opposition attack was far from threatening but due credit must be given to Shaw, who batted like a seasoned campaigner in his first match for India.

Shaw was on the ball right from the word go as he scored his first run on the second ball and followed it up with a four in the second over before hitting three fours in the fourth over.

Shaw, who did not mind using his feet against the spinners, brought up his fifty and became the youngest Indian to score a fifty on debut.
