Toyota to recall 2.4 million hybrid vehicles over stalling issue

Toyota to recall 2.4 million hybrid vehicles over stalling issue”

Toyota is recalling more than 2.4 million hybrids worldwide over a fault that could cause crashes.

A number of Toyota Prius, Prius+ and Auris hybrid vehicles have been recalled over an issue with the failsafe driving mode.

The call comes just one month after another recall where more than a million hybrids across the globe were found to have a technical problem that could cause fires in the vehicle.

The company said Friday that in rare cases the vehicles might fail to enter a "failsafe" driving mode, lose power and stall.

Another 830,000 are in North America, 290,000 in Europe, 3,000 in China, and the rest in other parts of the world.

Japan's transportation ministry said Toyota had reported three malfunctions locally related to the issue, but no accidents.

Borneo Motors, the authorised distributor for Toyota in Singapore, said in an email to Channel NewsAsia that 744 Toyota Prius cars in Singapore were affected by the latest recall. The vehicles in the current recall had been called back before, in February 2014 and July 2015, for a related issue, Jault said.

It also said it was in contact with customers and commercial partners to ensure the fault in the affected vehicles would be rectified once the software updates are available.

The vehicles were involved in an earlier recall that did not fix the previously unanticipated problem that is being addressed now, the company said in a statement.

But the news had little impact on Toyota shares, which ended marginally lower.

The vehicle maker said that it was not aware of any crashes due to the issue in Japan.
