Doctor Who: Fans hail Jodie Whitaker in female Doctor's first appearance

Doctor Who: Fans hail Jodie Whitaker in female Doctor's first appearance”

While Whittaker was honored to get the role, she noted that the casting announcement seemed like a bigger deal than it was because "gender becomes immediately irrelevant within the show because the Doctor is the Doctor". British comedian Lee Mack and actor Alan Cumming ("Instinct") had already said they would be in the show and were seen for the first time.

The Doctor is in, and on her way to toy chests and display shelves.

The doll, dressed in a rainbow-striped shirt paired, cropped pants and a trench coat, is priced at $49.99 for pre-order on Mattel's website.

This new season of Doctor Who wasn't just a major hit within the context of its own franchise, but it was also a monumental victory just in terms of overall BBC viewership.

Eccleston was watched by an average of 9.9 million for his premiere.

In the past, I've written about how badly I want to see historical Doctor Who episodes that go outside of the United Kingdom to other parts of the world that have equally rich histories.

Jodie Whittaker, Chris Chibnall and Matt Strevens revealed VERY IMPORTANT hints about the new season of Doctor Who!

The final result of all their brainstorming is the outfit that we saw at the end of episode 1 of season 11 of Doctor Who.

But by far the dominant conversation has been about the fresh, brand new 13th Doctor. When an alien invades the train she and Graham are travelling home on, she's the one who goes to investigate.

Whittaker's vision of her Doctor is all about hope. The show looked noticeably more fantastic than it has at any point in its history, aided by properly cinematic landscapes and an alien that still looked scary in close-up.

And she's imbued that theme into everything she put into the character - even the outfit. Still, that's small potatoes, especially when it gives the audience more time to get used to the show's numerous changes. American Whovians had grown accustomed to watching episodes hours later, but that wasn't the case this time.
