McConnell now open to high court nomination in election year

McConnell now open to high court nomination in election year”

The president told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House as he left for a speech in Florida that House Democrats are "thinking about impeaching" the new Supreme Court justice if they take over control of the lower house of Congress next month.

He angrily predicted that would backfire on Democrats in midterm Congressional elections in November. Kavanaugh's new benchmates will include Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who's praised the "Me Too" movement of women coming forward to say they were the subjects of sexual misconduct, as well as Justice Clarence Thomas, whose 1991 nomination nearly failed in the face of sexual harassment allegations.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) shared the president's optimism.

When Sen. Susan Collins announced, on Friday, October 5, that she would be voting "yes" on Brett M. Kavanaugh's confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, the four-term senator from ME went out of her way to convince Kavanaugh's detractors that he wasn't almost the far-right extremist they thought he was.

Christine Blasey Ford has still not been able to return home because of the volume of death threats she has received since she accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, her lawyers said Sunday.

Kavanaugh won confirmation on a 50-48 vote on nearly a party-line vote, with almost all Republicans supporting him and all but one Democrat opposing him.

His appointment is for life and he will strengthen conservative control of the nine-judge court, which has the final say on United States law.

Even before the allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, some Democrats questioned Kavanaugh's truthfulness during his initial Senate confirmation hearing. "That is who I am", he said.

He added: "I think it's an insult to the American public".

Ford testified September 27 in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she said that during a high-school party in the 1980s Kavanaugh pinned her down, tried to take off her clothes, and pressed his hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming. Kasich appeared on CNN's State of the Union and Coons was on NBC's Meet the Press. "I still think that it gives us a lot of enthusiasm on our side because there are a lot of people out there that are really upset, not just with the testimony that came from Judge Kavanaugh but the way the president was even mocking (Ford) days ago". Retiring Republican Rep. Lynn Jenkins holds the seat, and Democrats hope to flip it. "That's the only thing I remember, '" Trump said at the event, impersonating Ford.

He is replacing retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative jurist who often cast the deciding swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, upholding abortion and gay rights and the use of affirmative action aiding racial minorities in college admissions. "The best student, the best scholar, the great intellect, incredible record over many years". "I was assaulted when I was younger and I didn't tell anybody".

Trump continued lashing out at Democrats when he rallied supporters in Topeka, telling them the opposition party conducted a "shameless campaign of political and personal destruction" against Kavanaugh.

The Supreme Court plays a critical role in pro-life policy and has for decades.
