Saudis 'must prove' journo's exit from consulate: Erdogan”

A Saudi delegation had arrived in Istanbul to assist with the investigation, the statement said.

Fears are growing over the fate of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who Turkish officials say they believe was murdered in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul last week.

"We have to get an outcome from this investigation as soon as possible", Mr Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest. "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying 'he has left, '" Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest.

A source described by Reuters as a "Turkish official" told the wire service, "The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul".

Yasin Aktay, who advises Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in his ruling AK Party, told Reuters that Turkish authorities believed a group of 15 Saudi nationals were "most certainly involved" in the matter, and added that statements by Saudi officials on the absence of camera records were not honest. Saudi officials have denied the murder claims, insisting they are unaware of Khashoggi's whereabouts. "You need to prove it".

Erdogan told reporters on Sunday that authorities were examining camera footage and airport records as part of their investigation. But what Nuseibeh and his ilk are distracting from is that it was Reuters, a source neither Turkish or Qatari, that made the professional news judgment to publish the Turkish claims, and that The New York Times and others have since published follow-up reporting on the allegation including quotes from named officials.

Canada expressed concern Sunday over reports that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in his country's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Options to consider include expelling the Saudi ambassador for a time, imposing visa bans on other senior Saudi officials complicit in targeting Khashoggi, and even the suspension or reduction of US weapons sales and other security cooperation with the Saudis.

"Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal invited Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the Ministry yesterday".

Khashoggi has also criticised Saudi Arabia's role in Yemen, where Riyadh leads a military coalition fighting alongside the government in its war with Iran-backed rebels.

At the same time, Prince Salman said of President Trump, "I love working with him".

"It reflected their efforts from their perspective to show that stories or rumours that Jamal Khashoggi had been adducted or was being held inside the consulate were not true".

The White House, meanwhile, has so not yet issued a statement demanding answers on Khashoggi's disappearance.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman previously told Bloomberg that Riyadh was "ready to welcome the Turkish government to go and search our premises", which is Saudi sovereign territory. That is how breathtakingly fast you can fall out of favour with Saudi Arabia. The private Turkish broadcaster, NTV, reported on Monday that police had requested access to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate to obtain documents needed to marry his Turkish fiancee.

Saudi officials say he left shortly afterwards, but his fiancee, who was waiting outside, said he never came out.

The disappearance of a prominent critic of Saudi Arabia's rulers after entering the kingdom's Istanbul consulate risks severely tarnishing the reformist image of its de facto leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, experts say.

When Kristian Ulrichsen, a Rice University professor, responded to Nuseibeh's tweet with a question about Khashoggi's location, Nuseibeh had a curt response that again deflected attention from the Saudis: "Ask Erdogan and Tamim", referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar's ruler Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
