The mysterious case of the missing Saudi journalist

The mysterious case of the missing Saudi journalist”

These include ending all relationships with Iran and Turkey, ending support for the Muslim Brotherhood, and shutting down al-Jazeera, which has been highly critical of Saudi Arabia - things that are never going to happen.

CNN reported Sunday that the U.S. government is quietly working Khashoggi's case across several agencies and at senior levels of the administration. "Hopefully, that will sort itself out", Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday.

"I assure you that the reports that suggest that Jamal Khashoggi went missing in the Consulate in Istanbul or that the Kingdom's authorities have detained him or killed him are absolutely false, and baseless", it notes.

The British government on Monday said the allegations on the disappearance of Khashoggi are "extremely serious".

An advisor to Turkey's president has vowed that the country will prosecute all those involved in the suspected kidnapping or murder of a dissident Saudi journalist in Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, even if it involves the Saudi consul himself.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously said officials are welcome to conduct a search as there is nothing to hide.

On September 28, he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to get marriage documents related to his planned marriage to his fiancé, a Turkish citizen, Hatice (Khadija) Cengiz.

He said that everyone in the Turkish media knows that no high-placed sources are available to speak on this issue.

"At the moment there are certain people who arrived from Saudi Arabia".

The New York Times account says its sources report the Saudis "had arrived to silence Mr. Khashoggi, but that it was not clear if the plan had been to bring him back to Saudi Arabia alive, and something went wrong, or if the intention was to kill him there". "We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate", one of two Turkish officials said on Saturday.

The whistleblower organization tweeted that no British newspaper had led their Monday front pages with news about Khashoggi's suspected murder despite the fact that news agencies like the Associated Press and Reuters were all reporting on the story - and suggested that the lack of interest from the United Kingdom papers was due to the fact that they "all take Saudi money".

A former newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia and adviser to its former head of intelligence, Khashoggi left the country a year ago saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent. Turkey's Anadolu news agency also reported that the group of Saudis were briefly at the consulate. CNN reports that 15 Saudi nationals visited the consulate the same day as Khashoggi and have since left the country.

The United States is seeking more information, a State Department official said.

"The worrying trend that we see is a crackdown on critical and independent journalism in Saudi and about Saudi", Robert Mahoney, Deputy Executive Director of CPJ, told CBS News' Pamela Falk.

Istanbul prosecutors are investigating the incident, while the consulate said on Twitter that it was working in coordination with Turkish authorities.

But Khashoggi's fiancée is reportedly holding out hope, tweeting in Arabic late Saturday and translated by the Middle East Eye, "Jamal was not killed, and I don't believe that he was killed", the fiancée said.

Among the protesters was Tawakkol Karman, the Yemeni journalist and 2011 Nobel Peace Prize victor.

Saudi Arabia, which ranks 169th out of 180 on RSF's World Press Freedom Index, has launched a modernisation campaign since Prince Mohammed's appointment as heir to the throne.
