Always conducted myself with integrity, says Sanath Jayasuriya after ICC charge”

Sanath Jayasuriya, one of the game's greatest one-day batsmen, has been charged with two counts of failing to co-operate with anti-corruption investigators, plunging Sri Lankan cricket into crisis.

Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged with two counts of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, and has been given 14 days from October 15 to respond.

Article 2.4.6 relates to the "failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out", while Article 2.4.7 involves "obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out".

Jayasuriya does, though, say: "I have always conducted myself with integrity and transparency with matters concerning the sport and will continue to do so. The ICC will not make any further comment in respect of these charges at this stage", the ICC statement said.

He scored 13,430 runs in ODIs a total bettered only by Sangakkara, India's Sachin Tendulkar and Australia's Ricky Ponting and was well known for his big hitting at the top of the order.

The SLC source said when approached by the ICC, Jayasuriya refused to part with some information in his phone, which was sought by the governing body for its probe.

The investigation led to Galle curator Jayananda Warnaweera being banned for three years in 2016 for failing to cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

However, Minister Faiszer Mustapha said in Parliament last week that the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit had only cautioned that as the Sri Lankan team consists of all young players, they are more vulnerable to being exposed to match related crimes, but had not mentioned any of the cricketers specifically. They were laid following more than a year of ACU focus on Sri Lanka's 2017 ODI series against Zimbabwe. He also served as a minister. In 2011, former Lankan skipper Hashan Tillakaratne had, in a meeting with then Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, alleged that Jayasuriya and his former national teammate Aravinda De Silva and current SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala were involved in fixing of worldwide matches.
