California teen allegedly gave classmates cookies containing grandmother's ashes

California teen allegedly gave classmates cookies containing grandmother's ashes”

A school in the United States on Tuesday (Oct 16) sought to reassure parents after reports that some of its students had handed around cookies allegedly baked with human ashes.

According to Doroshov, the students - two female friends - brought the sugar cookies to the school's East Eighth Street campus, where about nine students ate them.

"We're getting this based on the statements", Lt Doroshov said. "Officers considered a California penal code section regarding the disposal of human remains in an improper manner but public-nuisance charges might be more appropriate, he said".

It is still unclear whether the cookies did actually contain the girl's grandmother's ashes, with NBC reporting that tests on them are still pending. "There could be some emotional issues experienced, but no one got sick from this physically".

Many have heard of brownies, cookies, and other sweet treats laced with marijuana making their way to school - baking with pot has been around for decades - but desserts made with human remains is a new and unsettling development.

He said they are working exclusively off student testimony but the biggest challenge will be filing charges if the school decides to move in that direction.

"It involves juveniles so there's various options as to what can be done with it", he said.

The students who ingested the cookies seem healthy, he says. "I was really repulsed".

In the meantime, local police are investigating the matter while the local Davis Joint Unified School District released a short statement on the matter.

Davis Joint Unified School District Spokesperson Maria Clayton released a statement that read in part, "While we can not comment on confidential student matters, the physical and social -emotional safety of our students is our first priority. I was upset that I wasn't even notified", said the boy's mother.

That student's mother says she met with Da Vinci Charter Academy Principal Tyler Millsap and demanded a copy of the statement her son was asked to sign.

The student's father said the way administrators handled it suggests the school is "more concerned about protecting themselves than protecting their students", Fox 40 News reported. "When we find wrongdoing has occurred, we apply disciplinary measures as well as restorative measures to fix the harm within our school community", the statement adds.
