Facebook reportedly building a device to stream Watch shows on your TV

Facebook reportedly building a device to stream Watch shows on your TV”

Facebook Portal, the social network's camera-equipped smart speaker created to rival Amazon Echo and Google Home, could use the data it collects to target advertising.

The company sent a statement to Recode clarifying that, while it won't show ads on Portal, it could use collected data to target ads across Facebook's platforms.

Facebook could be looking to add more video-related hardware to its recently announced Portal video chat device sooner rather than later. Apart from furthering support for apps, Facebook will also have to assuage privacy concerns before it can hope to convince people to turn their TVs into a big eye.

"Smart screen Facebook Portal can collect information about who you communicate with and what programs do you use to sell targeted ads. Other general usage data, such as aggregate usage of apps, etc., may also feed into the information that we use to serve ads", Facebook told Recode. The facebook's Portal device uses A.I.to automatically detect and follow people as they move throughout the frame during a video call. While it is hardly surprising that data might be used in this way, it is extremely disappointing to find out it could be the case considering Facebook originally said the exact opposite. Despite the fact that the company had said no data collected will be used for ad targeting, the Portal is fully capable of being a data-collection monster, and that data can absolutely be used for ad targeting. Dug up by frequent TechCrunch tipster Jane Manchun Wong a week ago, Ripley's name squared with Facebook's VP of Portal Rafa Camargo telling us that "we're already investing in expanding the product line with more products we want to launch next year". The company explained that this new technology could collect data about the users and then utilize the information gathered to target ads.

Facebook is reportedly building a gadget that turns your TV into a video chat device, camera and all. The device would allow Facebook to compete with Roku, Amazon, Apple and other set-top boxes.

This gives Facebook a chance to impact the media-dongle market featuring the likes of Google Chromecast, Amazon Firestick, and others.
