MTV's 'Real World' Is Coming To Facebook

MTV's 'Real World' Is Coming To Facebook”

Facebook at the MIPCOM trade show in Cannes on Wednesday announced a partnership with MTV to reboot Real World (formerly The Real World), a pioneering reality show that debuted way back in 1992.

The three new seasons will be filmed in Mexico, Thailand and the USA respectively, and will incorporate interactive elements via Facebook's platform that will "empower fans to shape the action" according to a press release from the two companies. The cast will talk with fans through Facebook Live and Watch Party, with more social media elements coming later on. According to Rajwat, every month, approximately 50 million people in the US alone watch at least a minute of content via Facebook Watch, and those who do tune in tend to spend five times longer watching video content through the platform than on video content that pops up in their news feeds.

Unlike previous installments, the social conversation on Facebook Watch will power the audience experience.

The Real World will be a re-imagined version of the MTV original and start with three seasons in the US, Mexico and Thailand.

Besides the Real World reboot, the team also shared more slate news in the session.

Speaking at MIPCOM, Facebook's head of content planning and strategy, Matthew Henick, and head of video products, Paresh Rajwat, revealed a slate of new global titles coming to the platform.

MTV's The Real World will be co-produced by creator Bunim/Murray Productions and MTV Studios.

Facebook launched Watch at the end of August in certain regions, but the service is yet to generate the traction Facebook had hoped for.

MTV president Chris McCarthy called the Facebook reboot an "opportunity to impact culture and create a new genre of television all over again". That's right: you can now play God with the Real World contestants. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), MTV operations span cable and mobile networks, live events, theatrical films and MTV Studios, a unit that produces new and reimagined content for SVOD and linear platforms based on MTV's library of over 200+ youth titles and franchises.
