Fmcg suppliers make new global commitment on plastics”

Ecostore is one of 250 organisations that has signed the new 2018 Global Commitment, including numerous world's largest packaging producers, consumer brands, retailers and recyclers, as well as governments and NGOs. The Foundation and United Nations Environment now aim to take this momentum to the next level by launching the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment.

Signatories, which include numerous world's largest packaging producers, brands, retailers and recyclers, represent 20% of all plastic packaging produced globally.

Danone, Paris, announced new commitments and actions to ensure its packaging will become 100 percent circular and to accelerate the global transition toward a circular economy of packaging, according to a Danone news release.

"What began as a result of the Industrial Revolution is now seriously out of control, and we need to reset the parameters and work out what success looks like for that industry", says, founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Ellen MacArthur.

Commenting on signing this document, the Vice-chancellor, Professor John G Hughes said: "As the VC of a University that's committed to Sustainability I'm delighted at the opportunity to endorse this latest campaign to eliminate plastic pollution at source and to promote a circular economy approach to production and consumption".

The signatories, which also include the governments of the UK, France and Scotland, pledge to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use to reuseable packaging instead.

The companies who have signed up include worldwide giants such as Coca-Cola, Danone, H & M, Unilever, Mars and L'Oreal, to name just a few. All businesses that have signed up to the Commitment will publish annual progress data. Individual targets within the commitment were set, and the collective ambition among signatories will grow with time.

We all know that plastic pollution is a very real problem, so much so that it's estimated by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

According to a company news release, Danone plans to ensure that all its packaging is created to be 100 percent recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

This is just one step on what will be a challenging journey, but one that can lead to huge benefits for society, the economy and the environment. Five venture capital funds have also pledged more than $200 million to support the initiative. We agree, it is essential that businesses step up as leaders in this space and drive change.

Pavan Sukhdev, President of WWF International, said, "The plastics crisis can only be solved with the combined efforts of all key players in the system". As such, since 2014, we have been using sugar biobased plastic to make our packaging.
