Former Kenyan Refugee, Ilhan Omar Wins in US Elections in Minnesota”

Americans created history on Tuesday when they elected two Muslim women - Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib - to Congress.

Among those elected was Somali-American, Ilhan Omar, who easily won the election in Minnesota district.

Sending her best wishes to Tlaib on the shared historic achievement, Omar wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations to my sister @RashidaTlaib on your victory!" She will succeed the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated the seat to run for Minnesota's Attorney General.

Omar made history in 2016 when she was elected the first Somali-American legislator in the US, for which she was featured in Firsts, TIME's multimedia project on trailblazing women have broken glass ceilings in their respective fields. She was defeated in the general election in November of past year.

Ellison was the first Muslim elected to Congress. "I can not wait to serve with you, inshallah".

Tlaib is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, a burgeoning left-wing group that also counts New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among its members. "We changed the course of history at a time we thought it was impossible".

Omar fled Somalia's civil war with her parents at the age of eight and spent four years at a refugee camp in Kenya.

Omar says yesterday's midterm election results show "clearly... that there is a rejection of politics of fear and divisiveness, that this is a country that really welcomes people and treats them like family, and don't only just welcome refugees and immigrants, we send them to Washington".

MA will also get its first black congresswoman while Arizona and Tennessee are set to elect their first female senators. A self-styled progressive, Tlaib is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and was arrested two years ago for disrupting a Trump speech in Detroit.

Her expected takeover of the top post of the House's Africa panel will probably not result, however, in major shifts in United States policy.
