One killed, two injured in Melbourne 'terror' attack”

A MAN has been shot by police after allegedly stabbing three people, killing one of them, and attacking officers with a knife following a auto explosion in Melbourne's CBD.

Police said the driver got out of the vehicle, which then caught fire, and attacked three bystanders with a knife.

The video also shows another individual, dubbed "trolley man", quickly barging in with a trolley directly hitting the attacker and stalling him to buy the police some time.

Officers were confronted by a man "brandishing a knife and threatening them", while passers-by alerted police that people had been stabbed, Victoria state police Superintendent David Clayton, said.

Footage from the Bourke Street scene shows a man making stabbing gestures at two uniformed officers near a burning auto before he was shot.

"The area has been cordoned off", police said.

Speaking at a news conference, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said that the suspect had "family associations that were well known" to police and that he had been known to Australia's security agency.

He thanked the Victoria Police officers involved and the members of the community who assisted.

A second person suffered a head injury and has been taken to hospital.

In separate footage, the man can be seen circling a bin with three officers, repeatedly lunging at them and running after them.

Police said they knew the identify of the suspect but declined to name him due to "operational reasons".

The officers were seen trying for at least a minute to detain the man peaceably as his attacks on them continued, before one office shot him with a weapon.

"In the midst of tragedy, you can find such pride in the work of by-standers to come to the aid of others", said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

Authorities say they do not perceive any ongoing threat.

Two other victims have been taken to hospital with injuries.

Witnesses have described hearing a loud bang during the incident.

Police initially responded to reports of a vehicle on fire at the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets.

One witness told ABC the deceased looked to be in his 50s or 60s.

Victoria Police are urging any witnesses to the incident to attend Melbourne West Police station to give a statement, or alternatively upload any images or videos from the incident to the Victoria Police facebook page.
