Ozone Layer Slowly Healing Thanks to Montreal Protocol

Ozone Layer Slowly Healing Thanks to Montreal Protocol”

NASA's Paul Newman, joint chairman of the report, said that two thirds of the ozone would have been destroyed by 2065 had the measures not been implemented.

If this rate of recovery continues, the ozone layer over the northern hemisphere and mid-latitudes could heal completely by the 2030s, the report said. When the ozone layer is weakened, more UV rays can get through, making humans more prone to skin cancer, cataracts and other diseases.

The earth's protective ozone layer is well on track to recovery, thanks to worldwide efforts against ozone-depleting substances.

'If ozone-depleting substances had continued to increase, we would have seen huge effects.

The hole in the Earth's ozone layer is expected to fully heal within 50 years, climate change experts predict in a new United Nations report.

WMO scientists said that since 2000, the ozone layer is recovering by 1-3% per decade.

The study, "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2018", is the latest in a series of reports, released every four years, which monitor the recovery of ozone in the stratosphere. Use of man-made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which release chlorine and bromine, began eating away at the ozone.

The Antarctic ozone hole is expected to gradually close, with springtime total column ozone returning to 1980 values in the 2060s.

Montzka said if the source of the new emissions could be identified and contained, the damage to the ozone should be minor.

But in 1987, countries around the world agreed in the Montreal Protocol to phase out CFCs and businesses came up with replacements. The hole reaches its peak in September and October and disappears by late December until the next Southern Hemisphere spring.

The UN had already hailed the success of the Protocol but the report said it was the first time that there were emerging indications that the Antarctic ozone hole had diminished in size and depth since 2000.

However, while most of the banned damaging gases have been phased out, the study found at least one violation - having spotting that production and emission of CFC-11 unexpected increased in eastern Asia since 2012.

"The careful mix of authoritative science and collaborative action that has defined the Protocol for more than 30 years and was set to heal our ozone layer is precisely why the Kigali Amendment holds such promise for climate action in future". And the Montreal Protocol is set to be enhanced in early 2019 with the ratification of the Kigali Amendment, which seeks to curb future climate change by targeting powerful greenhouse gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning.

"I don't think we can do a victory lap until 2060", Newman said.
