G20 summit shows strains over climate change

G20 summit shows strains over climate change”

European officials said a reference to refugees and migration - a sensitive issue for the Trump administration - was excised to ensure consensus.

The U.S.is the world's largest emitter of climate-warming greenhouse gases, and experts say Trump's decision to pull out of the agreement could have a long-term negative impact on efforts to fight global warming.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also met the press together after their meeting.

And they still had not tackled one of the thorniest issues: climate change.

At the outset of his meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Buenos Aires on Friday, Trump voiced optimism about the prospects of the planned U.S.

While a statement isn't legally enforceable, the Europeans see it as proof that the G-20 is still relevant and that multilateralism still works.

He said: "We have agreed on a statement that reflects the necessity of revitalising trade, of revitalising the WTO".

The threat of Britain crashing out of the European Union without a negotiated deal is another potential headwind, the International Monetary Fund said, as May uses the G20 to sell her vision of a "global Britain" after Brexit.

In the statement, China and France renewed their highest political commitment to the effective and transparent implementation of the Paris Agreement in all aspects.

More news: Algerian president cancels bin Salman meeting over cold

"We will send a clear signal - in any case, most of us" - for the success of global climate talks starting in Poland on Sunday, Merkel added.

Last weekend, Russian Federation seized three Ukrainian naval vessels and their crews in an incident escalating a tug-of-war that began in 2014 when Russian Federation annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and supported separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May both said they had pressed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for global involvement in investigating the October murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the country's consulate in Istanbul. Mr Macron said the crown prince only "took note" of his concerns.

French President Emmanuel Macron was captured on video seemingly lecturing Mr bin Salman, at one point being heard saying "I am anxious", "you never listen to me", and "I am a man of my word". Mr Erdogan called Mr bin Salman's response - that the crime had not been proven - "unbelievable" and complained that Saudi authorities have been unco-operative.

US intelligence agencies have concluded bin Salman must have at least known about the plot to kill Khashoggi.

Saturday will also see a highly anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose nations have been embroiled in an escalating trade war with new U.S. tariffs on China goods set to take effect a month from now.

Trump said his predecessor's passing would prevent him holding a post-summit news conference scheduled for later Saturday, "out of respect" for the Bush family.

But for financial markets, the weekend's main course comes after the summit when Trump is due to sit down to dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Buenos Aires.

In closing remarks, summit host and Argentine President Mauricio Macri said the countries had overcome "a number of challenges" to reach the agreement. "Japan is buying large amounts of our fighter jets, our F-35s and others, and we appreciate it very much", he said.
