Mika Brzezinski Under Fire for Using Homophobic Slur to Describe Mike Pompeo”

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski has apologized for uttering a homophobic remark on Wednesday's "Morning Joe" during a tirade against Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Brzezinski was absent from the MSNBC program Thursday, which a spokesman said was a planned day off to deal with a family matter. "I'm asking, are these the words of a patriot?" I should have said "water boy"... like for football teams or something like that ...

Grenell called Brzezinski's original comment "totally unacceptable & deeply disturbing" and later criticized her for not apologizing to gay people when she tweeted she was sorry for the choice of words. Dick Durban (D-IL), who was on the show when she said the offensive comment.

In particular, Brzezinski reacted to Pompeo's recent interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" in which he denounced the "tragic" murder but emphasized that Saudi Arabia is still "an important ally" of the U.S.

In response to one user who questioned her remarks, Brzezinski wrote, "Totally agree with you -SUPER BAD choice of words. Sexualizing gay people this way is created to control them & minimize our worth", Grenell said, while also adding that he didn't think much of Brzezinski's walk-back.

It didn't convince many, with the Washington Post describing the tweet as a "non-apology". "Try "toadie" or "lackey" or "stool pigeon" or 'a** kisser, ' or 'traitor, ' but maybe don't equate homosexuality with Mike Pompeo carrying water for the murderous regime in Saudi Arabia", Anderson added.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted, "Homophobic insults of the kind vomited out this morning by @morningmika have become a completely common and acceptable component of anti-Trump discourse, starting from the endless Trump/Putin gay insinuations to trash like this".

There was criticism from the Right; Donald Trump Jr. tweeted, "This is disgusting!"

"Outrageous", Grenell wrote Wednesday after Brzezinski's comment went viral. "I'm not the speech police", Hannity said.

"I'm dead serious", she persisted. In June, the New York Times published a cartoon showing an imaginary date between the United States president and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which viewers were supposed to find disgusting.
