Roy Hodgson praises Crystal Palace's discipline after 'bonus' win at Manchester City

Roy Hodgson praises Crystal Palace's discipline after 'bonus' win at Manchester City”

If Manchester City do indeed lose this match, they'll be six points behind Liverpool, with both teams having played 17 matches. There are a lot of games to play. The first half hour was a test of patience.

Palace had a nervous finish after City substitute Kevin De Bruyne made it 3-2 in the 85th with an apparent cross which goalkeeper Vicente Guaita couldn't keep out. Eden Hazard came close on 33 minutes but crashed his effort onto the bar as his search for a 100th Chelsea goal continued.

Andros Townsend has scored a goal of the season contender - if not the actual award victor - against Manchester City.

There was plenty of criticism on social media for manager Pep Guardiola and his players, with one Manchester City defender coming in for particularly scathing treatment.

John Stones also started in midfield in place of the injured Fernandinho and the Brazilian was sorely missed.

German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan nodded City in front in the 27th minute, meeting a Fabian Delph cross from deep with a firm, downward header.

After being given the chance to get a shot away by Kyle Walker, returning winger Schlupp drilled the ball across Ederson and into the far corner.

Guardiola turned to Sergio Aguero five minutes into the second half and, within seconds of the fit-again striker's introduction, Aymeric Laporte powered a header wide from a corner. Silva attempted to head away but the ball dropped invitingly towards Townsend around 30 yards out and he met it with a ferocious volley that flew into the roof of the net.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka whipped in a cross and Townsend headed against the post. Walker was overzealous in trying to clear the rebound, jumping into a tackle and catching Max Meyer in the area, allowing the reliable Luka Milivojevic to score emphatically from the spot. Until the closing stages the nearest City came to a fightback was a Leroy Sané free kick that struck an upright, though when De Bruyne beat Guaita five minutes from time with a dipping shot that looked suspiciously like a cross, the crowd woke up to encourage their side to retrieve at least a point.
