Arizona Cardinals fire head coach Steve Wilks after one year

Arizona Cardinals fire head coach Steve Wilks after one year”

After Arizona's last-second 27-24 loss at Seattle on Sunday, players seemed unanimous in their desire for Wilks to be given a second season.

There was praise Monday for Steve Wilks when it came his work ethic and energy, but Michael Bidwill was blunt when addressing his now-former coach and the upcoming search to find a new coach for the Cardinals.

Although there's been no official announcement, Wilks has told his assistant coaches that he will not be the head coach in 2019, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

General manager Steve Keim acknowledged he bears some responsibility for this very bad season but added "at the end of the day I have the utmost confidence in myself that I'm going to be able to get this thing turned around and head us in the right direction".

On Dec. 23, Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald texted an reporter and said, "We all would want him back" in regards to Wilks.

Wilks, 49, was introduced on January 23, 2018 to replace the retiring Bruce Arians, meaning his tenure lasted just 342 days.

"I just didn't feel like it was a plan that I wanted to get behind that would turn us around and get us back to the type of football that we expect and our fans deserve", Bidwill said.

The team's offence finished last in the league, where it had been all season. Rookie quarterback Josh Rosen was awful all year as well.

Bidwill said he had concerns about the coaching situation early on. I've got a heart, and I'm human.

A week later, Arizona was blown out by the Los Angeles Chargers 45-10 - the second time this season it lost by that score.

"We are all held accountable", General Manager Steve Keim said.

Despite those respected voices defending Wilks, he was sacked after just one season as Cardinals head coach.
