Germany seeks clues after massive data hack”

German media reported earlier that hackers had posted data, including credit card details and mobile phone numbers, with politicians from all major parties affected apart from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The stolen data, which comprises personal addresses, mobile phone numbers, letters, invoices and copies of identity documents, was published online via Twitter in December past year.

Fietz told a government press conference that an initial analysis suggested the leak affected politicians of all levels including the European parliament, German parliament and regional parliaments.

Hackers have leaked the personal data and documents of hundreds of German lawmakers, a government spokeswoman said Friday.

"Via this infection, it seems that other data could be tapped, such as first and last names but also cellphone numbers", he added.

The main account belonged to someone who described themselves as being involved in both security research and satire, Deutsche Welle said.

Bild newspaper reported all the data stolen in the attack dated back to before October 2018 but it was not clear when it began.

Several German law enforcement agencies are working on the high-profile case, including the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and the Federal Criminal Police (BKA).

Letters written by and to Merkel were part of the leaked data dump, along with some of her private information.

Political parties affected by the breach included Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), Christian Social Union (CSU) in Bavaria, the Social Democrats (SPD), Free Democratic party, the Left party and the Greens. The Twitter account used to spread the personal data has since been deleted.

Response: News of the hack has prompted Germany's intelligence agencies to meet this morning to coordinate a response.

The true extent of damage caused by the leak is not yet known although Justice Minister Katarina Barley said it was a "serious attack". Last year, security experts blamed the hacking of Germany's foreign ministry on the Kremlin. The identity of the hackers remains unknown, as does their motive. It's unclear why the tweets didn't attract attention until now - the same account (now suspended) has been doxxing people, according to the report, since the summer of 2017 and had amassed more than 16,000 followers.

Among them was Hajo Seppelt, an ARD investigative reporter who broke the story about alleged state-sponsored doping in Russian sports in 2016.
