Young Ottawa tennis players marvel at Andreescu's stunning wins

Young Ottawa tennis players marvel at Andreescu's stunning wins”

Julia Goerges defended her singles title at the WTA Tour's ASB Classic, ending the awesome run of Canadian qualifier Bianca Andreescu 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in Sunday's final.

Andreescu, 18, won 11 games in a row on her way to a 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 6-3 win over Williams at the Auckland International.

World No. 143 Andreescu saved 10 of the 12 break points she faced in a resolute display, managing to break through herself twice in each set on the Wozniacki serve to secure a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Defending champion Julia Goerges is bidding to become just the third back-to-back ASB Classic victor in tournament history, following Patty Fendick (1988-89) and Eleni Daniilidou (2003-04). I was in the zone and at one point, I didn't even know the score.

Not bad for a teenaged qualifier who started the week ranked No. 152 in the world.

"I guess Auckland just brings the best out of me, " Andreescu said.

Andreescu is the fifth player born in 2000 or later to reach a WTA final following Olga Danilovic, Dayana Yastremska, Anastasia Potapova and Amanda Anisimova, and a win in the final would make her the second-youngest player to hold a title following Moscow River Cup champion Danilovic.

After winning the first five games in the decisive third set, Andreescu let Williams back in the match.

Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., is also in the doubles draw with American Sofia Kenin. "I really think that it might throw a lot of girls off because they're not used to a girl like Bianca playing".

Andreescu has now played seven matches to just four for Goerges to reach the final.

Despite the distraction of a blustery wind, Bouchard seemed headed for an upset over the tournament second seed when she won the first set. "She played some terrific tennis, different from a lot of players on the tour and I'm sure we're going to hear a lot more of her". "But you can't do anything about it, you just have to accept it and stay positive about it".
