Radio Signals From A Galaxy Light Years Away Have Been Reported”

The second repeater is much closer than the first one, but the pattern of emissions appears to be similar - "which is interesting", Kaspi said. The existence of a second repeating burst suggests there could be many more of the mysterious signals in the cosmos.

CHIME - Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment - also spotted a dozen single burst radio waves, but with an unusual profile.

Knowing where they are, she furthered, "will enable scientists to point their telescopes at them, creating an opportunity to study these mysterious signals in detail". A new radio burst called FRB 180814.J0422+73 is now the second location in the sky to produce repeating radio bursts.

In a resounding endorsement of the novel telescope's capabilities, the repeating FRB was one of a total of 13 bursts detected over a period of just three weeks during the summer of 2018 - a time when CHIME was in its pre-commissioning phase and running at only a fraction of its full capacity.

"[We now know] the sources can produce low-frequency radio waves and those low-frequency waves can escape their environment, and are not too scattered to be detected by the time they reach the earth".

Far outside our Milky Way galaxy, something is causing repeating short bursts of radio waves to be released into space.

"An FRB emitted from a merger of two neutron stars, or a neutron star and a black hole, for example, can not repeat". Some have proposed explanations, such as energy being flung as black holes tear stars apart, or perhaps even distant alien civilizations sending out long-range signals in the hopes of finding intelligent life.

This particular set of signals was registered by the CHIME observatory, located in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, which consists of four 100-metre-long, semi-cylindrical antennas that are able to scan the entire northern sky each day.

"By understanding these propagation effects and being able to separate them from the intrinsic characteristics of FRBs, we hope to be able to use FRBs as probes of the electron distribution and magnetic field distribution in the Universe which would tell us about how the Universe built up structures, such as galaxies, galaxy clusters, and so on", explained Tendulkar.

Most previously detected FRBs have had frequencies of around 1,400 megahertz (MHz), but the new ones fell within a range below 800 MHz.

The CHIME/FRB Collaboration includes scientists from UBC and McGill as well as the University of Toronto, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the National Research Council of Canada.

The only other detected repeating FRB signal was picked up in November 2012. FRBs are typically in the 1,400 MHz range, and the previous lowest radio frequency was at 700 MHz.

The majority of the FRBs discovered by the telescope showed signs of "scattering", Phys.org reported - which led the CHIME team to believe the radio bursts are "powerful astrophysical objects". "But it has to be in some special place tog I've us all the scattering that we see".
