US Navy Vet Detained in Iran Since July”

His mother, Joanne White, told the newspaper the 46-year-old veteran went to Iran to see his girlfriend (pair seen above) and had booked a July 27 flight back home to San Diego.

American Navy veteran Michael R. White, 46, was detained in Iran after visiting his Iranian girlfriend, whose identity remains unknown, his mother said.

US Navy veteran Michael White is in Iranian custody, the Islamic Republic's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday, confirming claims made by White's mother a day earlier.

IranWire had quoted a former Iranian prisoner as saying that while in prison, he had met White in a prison in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad.

Farhadi told Iran Wire that White had met an Iranian woman online and traveled to Iran several times to see her.

Both the State and Homeland Security Departments are said to be aware of the situation, but are not providing details to the press. She said she filed a missing person report after he failed to return to work in California in late July.

She said she is anxious about his health, because he has had cancer and suffers from asthma.

State Department officials told her three weeks ago that he was in an Iranian prison, she told The Times.

A State Department official told Fox News that they are aware of the reports of US citizens in Iranian detention. "Due to privacy considerations, we have no additional information to provide at this time", the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

CNN pointed out that tensions between Iran and the USA have intensified following President Donald Trump's decision to withdrew from the nuclear deal with the Islamic republic in May and reinstated sanctions against the regime.

She said she requested that Switzerland, which represents U.S. interests in Iran in the absence of diplomatic relations, pay a consular visit to her son. "I know he was visiting his girlfriend". The State Department advises Americans not to travel to Iran, "due to the risk of arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens".

Baquer Namazi, a retired UNICEF official, and his son Siamak, an Iranian-American businessman, were sentenced in 2016 to 10 years in prison for spying and cooperating with the US government.

White would be one of several United States citizens and other foreign nationals held in Iran. The Trump administration has not engaged in a dialogue with the Iranians to seek the current prisoners' release.

The last time Iran released USA citizens from its prisons was when the nuclear agreement took effect in January 2016.
