After a disastrous quarter, Apple is cutting iPhone production

After a disastrous quarter, Apple is cutting iPhone production”

We can say that based on Apple's report on Chinese demand, it's not quite a global iPhone crisis as much as it is a Chinese consumer crisis. iPhone sales numbers there are plummeting as new entrants from Chinese rivals Huawei and others continually improve on quality and feature sets and sway customers away from iFruit products.

Apple cut its quarterly sales forecast for the first time in 16 years last week, saying that iPhone sales were lower than expected, particularly in China.

Apple ordered its suppliers to cut down the number of new iPhone model units coming off their production lines right before Tim Cook published his letter to the Apple investors at the beginning of the month.

Another source familiar with the situation said that under the revised plan, overall planned production volume of both old and new iPhones will be reduced to about 40 million to 43 million units for the January-March quarter from an earlier projection of 47 million to 48 million units. And it applies to all of them, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Market research firm Canalys estimates shipments fell 12 percent in China a year ago and expects smartphone shipments in 2019 to dip another three percent, to below 400 million for the first time since 2014. Apple suppliers, including Britain's Renishaw, were hit by the sell-off.

Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Cupertino probably decided on that initial goal based on previous sales, seeing as it sold 52.21 million units within the same period past year.
