Wolf Blood Super Moon will be visible from Northern Ireland

Wolf Blood Super Moon will be visible from Northern Ireland”

Total lunar eclipses offer some interesting perspective, astronomers say. Outside, I hope, looking up.

Storms blew into the Inland Northwest on Thursday bringing rain and snow. The low Sunday night is expected to be 22 degrees.

The Spokane Astronomical Society will be set up for viewing the eclipse at the Southeast Sports Complex, 2700 E. 46th Ave., said Nick Monkman, president of the SAS.

It's hard to predict the exact hue of lunar eclipses, but whatever shade results can offer insight about the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere. The Inland Northwest is well-positioned to see it, if not for the weather. The Moon is given the name Super Moon when a full moon comes within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth.

Lunar eclipses take place cyclically, on nights when the moon passes through the shadow of our planet backlit by the sun.

"During a total lunar eclipse, the moon appears red and that's because the light is being refracted through the atmosphere of Earth".

The entire eclipse will last more than five hours and will end at 7.48am.

By the time the total eclipse starts at 11:41 p.m., the view should be clear with only spotty upper level clouds, says Scott Krentz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based out of Greenville-Spartanburg. The only light wavelength left is red - dimly illuminating the moon with less than one-thousandth of the full moon's normal brightness.

The "wolf" part is said to originate from a Native American tradition of referring to January's full moon as the Full Wolf Moon.

"Wolves come out that evening", Bruce said. It's the most intense of the three types of lunar eclipses - total, partial and penumbral. In October, it is the hunter's moon.

The moon orbits around the Earth every 27.3 days in a path that is slightly elliptical, meaning it can be closer or farther from Earth throughout the month.

During that hour the moon could disappear completely from view or, more likely, some of the light from the sun will filter through the Earth's atmosphere and you may see an orangey red globe hanging in the sky. This accounts for the infrequent occurrences of total lunar eclipses.

"If it were a ideal plane we would have an eclipse every month", Bruce said.

Lastly, pick a time to see the eclipse, the first or second half (3.30am - 6am or 6.30am onwards).

WALTER FREEMAN, PHYSICIST, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY: "Minutes after 10:30 p.m".
