Microsoft's Edge browser now warns you when you're reading fake news”

Microsoft's internet browser is cautioning against the Mail Online in its fight against the spread of fake news after it ranked the title's journalism at a barrel-scraping one out of five for credibility - placing it on the same level as Kremlin mouthpiece RT.

"Microsoft is partnering with NewsGuard to offer the NewsGuard browser extension on Microsoft Edge, and a feature in Microsoft Edge mobile apps for iOS and Android to help our customers evaluate news sources". The feature can be activated by visiting Settings News rating Display rating address bar. Voila! You don't have to get into the messy business of making editorial calls about what's fake news and what isn't - potentially pissing off big swaths of your user base - if you just tamp down the reach of everything that's not a personal Facebook account. Perhaps the most notable is that the Daily Mail website, Mail Online, is flagged up as "generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability".

Once users have enabled the NewsGuard feature on the Edge browser for mobile, they will see a red or green badge in the URL bar when they open a website.

The idea is to get your news from sites approved by NewsGuard, and to take reports from other sites with a grain of salt.

While NewsGuard comes pre-installed on Microsoft Edge for mobile, it is also available as an extension for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

"We spell out fairly clearly in the label exactly how many times we have attempted to contact the Mail". We would love to hear if they have a complaint or if they change anything.

"We want people to game our system".

Brill himself is a veteran centrist journalist and author, his co-CEO Gordon Crovitz is a former Wall Street Journal Columnist. We pride ourselves on our transparency - we're not an algorithm. According to their co-founder has told The Guardian that they are "happy to be blamed", and that "unlike the platforms [they are] happy to be accountable". And this is not some one-off initiative either: NewsGuard is part of Microsoft's Defending Democracy program, which combats purported election meddling, presumably primarily from Russian Federation. We'd be delighted to talk to them and have a dialogue.
