Actor Albert Finney has died aged 82

Actor Albert Finney has died aged 82”

Longtime character actor Albert Finney died today at the age of 82.

These words were uttered by Albert Finney, the Miller's Crossing actor who got his start during the British "kitchen sink" era of the 1950s and '60s, in the film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

The Scrooge actor has died, years after his battle with kidney cancer in 2011, though it's unclear if it is related to his death.

A statement from his family said: "Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side".

Our thoughts are with Finney's family and friends at this hard time. Tributes have been pouring in for the beloved star with actor David Morissey paying tribute to the legend. Both on stage and screen.

From there, it would be almost 20 years since Finney was up for the industry's top acting prize. A real hero of mine.

Albert was born in Salford in 1936 and his acting career began when he secured a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he established himself as a theatre actor.

He went on to play the title role in Scrooge and Hercule Poirot in Murder On The Orient Express, which garnered his second nomination, as well as Daddy Warbucks in Annie.

His big film break came as "angry young man" Arthur Seaton in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. However, fans of pop and geek culture probably know Finney best for his roles in big modern franchises like James Bond's Skyfall; as the shadowy mastermind doctor in The Bourne Ultimatum and the Bourne Legacy spinoff films; and Tim Burton projects like Corpse Bride and Big Fish. He was also celebrated for his performance as Winston Churchill in the BBC and HBO's 2002 TV film The Gathering Storm - the role saw him win Best Actor at the Golden Globes, Emmys, and BAFTAs.

Finney was married three times, to actresses Jane Wenham and Anouk Aimeé from 1957-61 and 1970-78, respectively, and to travel agent Pene Delmage in 2006.
