Health Officials Urge Everyone to Get Vaccinated”

In light of measles data for the year 2018 released today, World Health Organization urges European countries to target their interventions to those places and groups where immunization gaps persist.

And when it comes to combatting preventative diseases, the CDC says there are no alternatives to vaccination.

The Vancouver Clinic, which operates medical offices and urgent care centers in the area, reported that shots administered jumped from 263 in January 2018 to 1,444 last month, a almost 450 percent increase.

In the United Kingdom, there were 953 measles cases a year ago.

Similar outbreaks have been occurring in Europe: In 2017, there were 25,863 cases of measles; previous year, that surged to more than 82,000. The risk of death due to measles is greater for infants and adults than for children and adolescents.

In many countries, anti-vaccine campaigners seek to dissuade parents from getting their children immunized, despite strong scientific evidence that vaccines are safe and effective. "This means that gaps at local level still offer an open door to the virus", the WHO's regional director for Europe, Zsuzsanna Jakab, said in a statement. "We can not achieve healthier populations globally, as promised in WHO's vision for the coming five years, if we do not work locally". "These diseases come back and they clobber us if we are not protected".

"The measles vaccine isn't ideal, but one dose is 93 percent effective at preventing illness", Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County's health officer, said in a statement.

Clark County, Washington - where the outbreak began on December 31 - reported Wednesday that is has identified 13 additional suspected cases, including four in unvaccinated people who had contact with contagious individuals.

Forty-three European countries interrupted transmission of endemic measles for at least 12 months as of the end of 2017. If people aren't vaccinated, the virus can spread easily. "Progress in achieving high national coverage is commendable".

Measles spreads through direct contact or through the air.

MMR vaccine rates in two areas in the Pacific Northwest, which has been at the epicenter of a measles outbreak, are surging as people rush to protect themselves and their children from the virus.

Melnick added that while 78% of schoolchildren in Clark County are vaccinated, some schools have much lower rates. The Regional Office is working with these countries to implement a coordinated strategy to address targeted programme areas.

Most of the countries struggling with suboptimal immunization coverage against measles in the Region are middle-income countries.
