Davao City measles cases down; adults to be vaccinated too”

The number of measles cases rose from 791 in 2017 to 5,120 in 2018.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles disagreed, saying he did not believe compulsory immunization was needed.

The Health Department in the Philippines announced on Thursday (Feb 7) an outbreak of measles in the Manila metropolitan area and other regions that has caused 22 deaths.

While global measles deaths have decreased by 84 percent worldwide in recent years - from 550,100 deaths in 2000 to 89,780 in 2016 - the World Health Organization (WHO) said measles is still common in many developing countries, particularly in parts of Asia and Africa.

"Nutritional support and oral rehydration are important measures to increase body resistance and replace lost body fluids caused by coughing, diarrhea, and perspiration", Duque said, adding that immunization and vitamin A supplementation of nine-month old children are the best defenses against measles. "I can not be blaming her for that", he said.

The DOH Epidemiology Bureau (DOH EB) has reported almost 200 confirmed cases through January 19 in the region.

Last year, vaccination coverage was reported to be at around 40 percent.

On the other hand, the epidemiology department of San Lazaro, a referral hospital for infectious diseases, reported 1,629 measles patients, mostly children as young as 2 months old, as of Friday.

From January 1 to 26, a total of 108 cases of measles with eight deaths were reported to the QC Health Department.

"We are very concerned [about] the situation because there are many cases of measles that ... could have been avoided if we had achieved higher vaccination coverage", Weiler said. Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra also came to the defense of Acosta, saying she was just doing her job helping the families of children who died supposedly after being inoculated with the controversial anti-dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia.

Linga also called on the parents of children who are already showing symptoms of flu and fever to immediately bring their children to the nearest health center for a check-up. "Let's have them inoculated before the outbreak of measles worsens", Sen.

Officials said the unusual spike in the number of deaths was due to a dengue vaccination scare in 2017 that prompted many parents to take their children out of the state immunization program.

The health department and public health advocates blamed the measles outbreak on a massive health scare over Dengvaxia, the once-promising dengue vaccine introduced by the government three years ago.
