Ultra Processed Food Impacts Health

Ultra Processed Food Impacts Health”

A person has a 14 percent higher risk of dying an early death with every 10 percent increase in the amount of ultra-processed food they eat, according to a study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Ready-to-eat snack foods may be convenient but researchers have warned that they could also be deadly.

During the study period, about 600 participants died. They found that those who consumed ultraprocessed food are at a higher risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and cancer.

To investigate the negative health consequences of the consumption of ultraprocessed food, the researchers recruited a total of 44,551 French adults who kept a 24-hour dietary record and completed questionnaires about their health. This percentage is actually fairly low compared to most western cultures: the diet of families in the United Kingdom reportedly consists of about 50% ultra-processed foods; this number rises to nearly 58% for Americans, according to a 2016 study. The average age of participants was 57 years old, and almost 73 percent were women.

Eating a lot of heavily processed foods is linked to a risk of earlier death, according to a study.

"An increase in ultraprocessed foods consumption appears to be associated with an overall higher mortality risk", researchers wrote. "It's another step in our understanding of the link between ultra-processed food and health", explained Mathilde Touvier, director of the nutritional epidemiology research team at Paris 13 University. More significant than 200 of the deaths have been cancer-related whereas 34 had been from cardiovascular disease, in keeping with The Guardian.

Ultra-processed foods - which are largely consumed by young people with low levels of income and education - made up 14 percent of the food weight consumed and about 29 percent of total calories of the participants. The authors of the research say that further studies are needed to confirm these results.

However, "ultraprocessed" is a huge category of foods, and by lumping so many things together, the researchers lost sensitivity in their results and can not pinpoint what exactly is causing the effect seen in the study, said Fitzgerald, who was not involved in the research. More than half the United Kingdom diet is ultra-processed food, the Guardian revealed a year ago.
