Vaccination key to preventing measles spread

Vaccination key to preventing measles spread”

The number of measles cases in the USA has reached the triple digits in a little over a month.

They say the trolls may have contributed to the 2018 outbreak of measles in Europe that killed 72 people and infected more than 82,000 - mostly in Eastern and Southeastern European countries known to have been targeted by Russia-based disinformation campaigns.

David Broniatowski, a professor at George Washington University in the USA capital, has documented how trolls at the Internet Research Agency have amplified the vaccine debate in the United States and "eroded public consensus on vaccination" since 2014. Four cases in Oregon's Multnomah County and one in Seattle-King County are linked to the outbreak in Vancouver. SSPE generally develops seven to 10 years after a person has measles, even though the person seems to have fully recovered from the illness.

The WHO says the Philippines has seen a decline in the 1st dose of measles vaccine in the past decade - from above 80% in 2008 to below 70% in 2017.

However, vaccinations can increase herd immunity, a scenario in which enough people get vaccines that it's hard for a virus to spread in a community. States must equip these children with access to vaccinations and the resources to reverse misinformation while closing loopholes that allow families to opt out of vaccination requirements for personal reasons.

This data reflects a almost 8-fold increase in measles cases in the Philippines.

On Monday, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III led a National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council meeting to address the measles outbreak in the different regions nationwide.

On Wednesday, Vancouver Coastal Health confirmed a second case of measles in Vancouver in a week. A state of emergency has been declared in the Pacific Northwest in response to 26 confirmed cases in Washington, and all three individuals affected by a separate outbreak in Georgia had not been vaccinated.

Every region in the state recorded a spike in cases last month, with the most dramatic upticks observed in Anchorage, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, and the Interior.

At least eight people have died in Ukraine, where 53,000 cases have been reported.

Measles is so contagious that almost everyone who isn't immunized and comes into contact with the virus will get sick.

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed a few days later by a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the chest. A majority of those cases are for kids who are 10 or younger.

In Toronto, public health authorities last week warned that some travellers through Pearson International Airport on January 27 may have been exposed to measles. According to the Washington Department of Health, one in four kindergarten aged students in Clark County did not receive all of their required vaccinations (including measles, mumps and rubella) in the 2017-2018 school year. The report says that Russia's Internet Research Agency made social media posts on both sides of the argument in an effort to erode public trust in vaccination.
