Pushups May Predict Men's Heart Disease Risk

Pushups May Predict Men's Heart Disease Risk”

The study looked the heart health of male firefighters throughout a 10 year span and found that men who are able to do forty push ups had a significant reduction of cardiovascular disease risk than men who were able to complete fewer than ten. This is the first known study to report an association between push-up capacity and subsequent cardiovascular disease outcomes. In the group of participants who performed between 21 and 30 push-UPS, the risk was 75% lower than that of the group who wrung from 0 to 10 times.

In fact, the push-up test was more accurate in predicting heart disease than a standard treadmill test.

"Our study provides proof that push-up capacity could be a no-cost and an easy method for helping to assess CVD risk in almost any type of setting. However, objectively measured CRF levels are often significantly lower than expected based on self-reported physical activity".

Researchers also examined the firefighter's performance on a treadmill, overall physical health, and answers to health questionnaires.

Objective assessments of physical fitness are considered strong predictors of health status; however, most current tools such as treadmill tests are too expensive and time-consuming to use during routine exams.

In order to see that, researchers have evaluated more than 1,100 firefighters from IN (their average age was of 39).

They were followed for 10 years and results showed 37 CVD-related outcomes.

Turns out, all of them except one were unable to complete more than 40 pushups.

American and Italian scientists conducted a study and found that the number of push-UPS that can carry men, it is possible to estimate the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Although the researchers note that as the study only included middle-aged, active men, the results may not be generalisable to women, men of other ages or individuals who are less active, and further research in diverse populations is needed.

What's interesting is that push-ups are now the best way to determine CVD cases.

"This study emphasises the importance of physical fitness on health, and why clinicians should assess fitness during clinical encounters", said senior author Stefanos Kales, professor in the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard Chan School and chief of occupational medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance.
