Albot puts Moldova on ATP title map

Albot puts Moldova on ATP title map”

The Moldovan star had to wait for 56 minutes as the match was halted by rain and slowed down Albot's momentum.

They battled into a tie-breaker and Evans had the first three chances at taking the victory, each time denied by Albot, who capitalised on his first match-point opportunity for the triumph.

The Moldovan raised his level in set number two, producing great tennis on both the first and second serve and reducing the number of errors to keep the pressure on Daniel who fell 3-1 down after a forehand crosscourt victor from Albot who saved two break points in game seven for a 5-2.

"It feels unbelievable. You work so much. You work your whole life, your whole career, and at the end you win a tournament", said Albot who had never been to an ATP final before. Albot has set virtually every record for Moldovan tennis, adding a crown jewel with his first title.

The 82nd-ranked Albot is expected to climb to a new career-high close to No. 50. From there, Evans was the one putting pressure on the Moldovan, getting to 15/30 on Albot's serve in the 29-year-old's next two service games. Evans, playing his seventh match in eight days, had to reach deep within himself to force the tiebreak, having been a break down early in the third set when there was a lengthy rain delay, breaking back for 4-4 against a solid counter punching opponent.

Albot, now ranked 82nd, is projected to rise to around 50th when the rankings are updated on Monday.

"It's easy to say I didn't take the match points but I thought he played great in the moments he needed to play great", he said.

Evans had played two more matches than Albot this week as he had to come through qualifying, with those extra exertions appearing to take their toll. I have to give him credit.
