Sprint 5G coming in May, Google Fi will get support too

Sprint 5G coming in May, Google Fi will get support too”

Sprint is also joining teams with Google so that Google Fi customers can take advantage of Sprint's 5G if they have a compatible device.

T-Mobile is now planning to launch its 5G network in the second half of 2019.

Sprint CEO Michel Combes announced the May timing for Sprint's 5G rollout at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, claiming that Sprint plans to be the "first real mobile 5G in the US with real devices with real coverage". "We don't have plans - for the smartphone plans that you see today - to charge differently for 5G enablement versus 4G enablement", T-Mobile's Mike Sievert said during the operator's recent quarterly conference call with analysts. That devices supports millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum, which T-Mo also plans to use for its 5G network. Instead, it'll wait to formally launch its 5G network in the latter half of the year when phones that can tap into the longer range 600MHz spectrum will be available.

In lobbying for its merger, Sprint and T-Mobile use their combined efforts in 5G as a reason to combine, saying neither company can't build a national network on its own.

Sprint is building its network on the mid-band 2.5 GHz spectrum and "cutting-edge Massive MIMO" tech, with the carrier touting 10s increased in bandwidth over current-gen LTE networks. "With 5G, we look forward to giving Sprint customers even greater experiences from gaming and entertainment services, to IoT and business applications".

5G promises new levels of innovation and progress to connect people, places and the billions of things Sprint customers do with blazing-fast speed and ultra-reliable wireless connectivity. All of this is likely to change should Sprint's proposed merger with T-Mobile go ahead. Additionally, it will offer a 5G hub/hotspot from HTC. Because Sprint has not yet released its 5G service pricing and usage parameters, it's unclear whether the company is going to position the Hub as a replacement for in-home broadband service. Ray said the company had hoped to have a device sooner but it hasn't worked out.

Sprint said it would devote 60MHz to LTE and 60MHz to 5G on its 2.5GHz spectrum.
