Tesla: China suspends customs clearance for Model 3 vehicle”

China is now holding around 1,600 Tesla Model 3s at the customs in Shanghai and the customs authority has issued a notice prohibiting the sale of any Model 3 already imported in China because some vehicles have been found to lack proper labeling to make them legal on the Chinese market, financial outlet Caixin reported on Tuesday. China also suspended customs clearances on some of Tesla's vehicles.

Tesla has reportedly been ordered by Chinese officials not to sell any previously imported Model 3 vehicles, and that inspectors had been instructed to: "step up inspections of other imported Tesla models".

Less than a week after having launched the new base versions of the Model 3, Tesla has already produced the first batch of Model 3 vehicles with the standard battery.

Tesla has cut prices in China several times in the last few months to make its cars "more affordable" and revive sales hit by Sino-U.S. trade tensions.

Tweet by Musk about the Model Y unveiling comes shortly after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission questioned Musk over the tweet about 500 thousand cars in a year.

Musk said in January that he was "optimistic" Tesla would earn a small profit during the first quarter, but changed that prediction on the February 28 call, saying Tesla would likely not be profitable during the first quarter.

He said the facility expects to start up production on some of its manufacturing lines by the end of the year.

The carmaker earlier offered a 35,000 US dollar version of its Model 3 sedan and said its global sales would now be online-only, steps created to increase demand and cut overhead costs.
