Giants Trading LB Olivier Vernon to Browns

Giants Trading LB Olivier Vernon to Browns”

Gettleman sent linebacker Olivier Vernon and a fourth-round pick (No. 132 overall) to the Browns for guard Kevin Zeitler and a fifth-round pick (No. 155 overall).

The trade won't become official until 4 p.m. on March 13, the start of free agency and the NFL's calendar year.

While trading Vernon creates a void on a pass rush that only managed 30 sacks last season, the second-fewest in the National Football League, acquiring Zeitler is a significant win for general manager Dave Gettleman and the Giants. He is currently the third-highest-paid at his position now behind Dallas' Zak Martin and Andrew Norwell of Jacksonville, who the Giants wanted to sign in free agency previous year. You remember all the buzz this week about rumors out of Cleveland?

The NFL Network reporter also pointed out that discussions never got serious from the Giants end because of the offer. He signed a five-year deal with the Giants in 2016 and was elected to the Pro Bowl two years later. He has three years remaining on his five-year, $60 million contract.

Rebuilding the offensive line has been a standing priority for the Giants in recent years, particularly after Gettleman whiffed on signing Patrick Omameh last offseason. He missed nine games over the past two seasons with various injuries.

In addition to adding Zeitler, the Giants on Friday re-signed center Jon Halapio, who had been an exclusive-rights free agent.

Vernon might be a decent pass rusher, but he made some boneheaded mistakes previous year.

Zeitler was available via a trade because the Browns believe he was also overpaid.
