Jussie Smollett Indicted On 16 Felony Counts!”

"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was indicted Friday evening by a Chicago Grand Jury on 16 felony counts for allegedly staging a hate-crime hoax and intentionally lying to police about the nature of the crime.

According to CBS 2 in Chicago, each count against Smollett stems from the false statements he gave to two Chicago Police officers and the alleged acts he claims were carried out on him. The second charges are for telling a false report to a detective the same day, while adding he was approached from behind and fought back, including details of skin color and being kicked in the back.

In February, Smollett was charged with felony disorderly conduct. Although prosecutors had already issued the single charge, the grand jury, apparently, was still processing evidence supplied by the Chicago Police Department.

Each new charge carries a potential jail sentence of up to four years. The two brothers were arrested at Chicago O'Hare Airport and ultimately agreed to cooperate and testify to the grand jury. He is also believed to have sent a threatening letter to himself days before the staged assault.

The first concerns what the actor told police following the alleged attack - the allegations that they had yelled slurs, the noose and the beating itself. In an eyebrow-raising statement, Smollett's attorney called the actor "a man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence".

Smollett is due to appear in court next week on the first charge.

The indictment charges Smollett with 16 counts of disorderly conduct.
