Nirav Modi is in London, has started a new diamond business

Nirav Modi is in London, has started a new diamond business”

Nirav Modi, 48, is now living in a three-bedroom flat in the Centre Point tower block, where rent is estimated to cost £17,000 a month, reports the Telegraph.

Nirav Modi, one of the prime accused in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam has been tracked down to London's West End where he has reportedly begun a new diamond business.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who has often been critical of the Centre, has also drawn attention to the reported luxury of Nirav Modi's current life in London.

The UK-based newspaper on Saturday shows Modi, apparently sporting a jacket made from "Ostrich hide" which costs "at least £10,000" (over Rs 9 lakh). "Himself, Nirav Modi or the people who let him escape?" the Congress tweeted on its official handle.

The report stated that when asked about whether he had sought asylum in the UK, Nirav Modi ducked the question saying, "Sorry, no comments".

"The business, which was incorporated last May, is linked to his flat in Centre Point although he is not listed as a director at Companies House", the Telegraph reported, wondering how Modi's presence remained unnoticed by the British authorities.

Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi is accused of over Rs 13,000-crore PNB scam, along with his his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi is wanted in India.

The government today said it was aware that the fugitive billionaire was in the UK. The Telegraph has also learnt from a well-placed government source that, Modi was given a national insurance number in recent months by the department for work & pensions and has been able to operate online bank accounts in the United Kingdom while wanted by Indian authorities.

Besides, Choksi - now a citizen of Antigua & Barbuda, many celebrities, industrialists, top businessmen, film and television personalities own big and small properties on this picturesque stretch of central coastal Konkan region, barely an hour's boat ride from the mainland at Gateway of India. When a journalist questioned him about his fraud in India, he just said no comment and avoided the questions. "Whatever steps that need to be taken by the government of India will be taken".

The 48-year-old bank fraud fugitive who faces an Interpol red corner notice is now subject of an extradition request by India.
