Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown Won't Run For President”

Senator Sherrod Brown, one of the Democratic Party's progressive stalwarts, has announced he will not run for president in 2020.

Elected to the Senate in 2006, Brown has spent much of his career in Washington focused on workers' rights and labor issues.

Brown, who was re-elected to the Senate to a third six-year term last year, had recently visited several early primary/caucus states including Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and SC. "The best place for me to make that fight is in the United States Senate".

Brown says he feels his "dignity of work" tour succeeded in its mission of putting the struggles of working people on the Democrats' 2020 radar.

Brown said on Thursday that he would continue to listen to those concerns from voters and pledged to "keep calling out Donald Trump and his phony populism".

Brown, a fierce populist, won reelection in OH last fall even as every other Democratic statewide candidate fell far short, and has a proven track record of winning white working-class voters and carrying a Midwestern state that has moved hard towards the GOP in recent years.

He said he made the decision Wednesday after saying as recently as a few days ago that he would decide whether he'd run by the end of this month. "My goal for our tour is to make the dignity of work the centerpiece of the Democrats' 2020 campaign because I believe that's the way to beat Donald Trump". The team of Brown advisers had mapped out a fundraising and travel plan for a presidential candidacy starting in April.

The Ohio Democrat has announced his 2020 decision to a group of home-state reporters. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Attorney General Eric Holder and Oregon Sen.

But Brown was facing a tough route to the nomination - with other top-tier candidates pulling the types of voters he'd need to win. Sen.

In addition to Brown not being fully committed to the rigors of a campaign, the likely candidacy of former Vice President Joe Biden also played into Brown's thinking.
