Pakistan escalates militant crackdown after Kashmir attacks

Pakistan escalates militant crackdown after Kashmir attacks”

World powers including the United States and Saudi Arabia are making efforts to arrange a meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at a neutral venue to defuse the Pak-India tension, official sources said on Friday.

The paper said the relative calm after last week's confrontation between the two nations is not a solution. India, Pakistan Should Turn the Page, Covert Crisis into Opportunity: China.

While New Delhi claims that the air raid on Balakot was targeted against terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group, which claimed responsibility for the 14 February deadly suicide bombing targeting Indian paramilitary forces, Islamabad has refuted this, arguing that there were no terror camps in Balakot and that it was a pure act of aggression by the Indian Air Force which was aptly responded to by the Pakistan military.

One such attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir on February 14, claimed by the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) Pakistan-based group, killed 40 Indian paramilitary police and led to clashes between the nuclear-armed rivals as India retaliated. "As a state possessing nuclear weapons that sits at the nexus of Russian, Chinese, Indian, Iranian and U.S. geopolitical interests, Pakistan will always be a country of importance to the USA".

The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in aerial combat and captured its pilot, who was handed over to India on March 1.

"And while it's good when India and Pakistan decide to walk back from the brink, as they seem to be doing now, the United States should be ready to assist if they can not".

"The then government in Delhi should have taken steps and questioned Pakistan. While it is on America's list of terrorist organisations and is formally banned in Pakistan, the group has been protected and armed by the Pakistani intelligence service".

The environment has comparatively cooled down between the two countries, however, experts are saying that threats of war are not over yet.

"In recent days, Pakistani authorities said they detained 44 members of various armed groups, including a brother of Masood Azhar, the head of JeM, and planned to seize assets of militants on the United Nations terrorist list".

Earlier at the event, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi reiterated that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would fulfill its election promises.

Pakistan has never seriously cracked down on militant groups that attack India.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has credited the United States among other global powers with helping to ease tensions with India through what he said was "private US diplomacy."He did not elaborate further".

The NYT said that without worldwide pressure, a long-term solution was "unlikely and the threat of nuclear war remained".
