Chelsea Manning Jailed After Refusing To Testify About WikiLeaks

Chelsea Manning Jailed After Refusing To Testify About WikiLeaks”

Earlier in the day, Manning told reporters that she was prepared to go to jail following the closed contempt hearing for her resistance to provide testimony because she doesn't believe in the grand jury process'.

Manning was arrested in Iraq in 2010 for disclosing more than 700,000 confidential documents, videos and diplomatic cables to the anti-secrecy website.

Manning was subpoenaed in late January, and has said she would not cooperate with the grand jury, objecting both to the secrecy, as well as to the fact that her lawyers would not be able to be with her during her testimony, she called the process "terrible, to say the least", and argued it favors prosecutors. Her bulk disclosure vaulted the group and Assange to global fame years before WikiLeaks gained a different type of notoriety for publishing stolen Democratic emails that Russian hackers had stolen during the 2016 presidential campaign. Chelsea has stood by the testimony from her 2013 court-martial, and this subpoena serves no legitimate objective.

"It has always been our intent and hope for her to testify and comply with the valid court order and valid grand jury investigation. I will exhaust every legal remedy available", said Manning.

Outside the court, about 10 protesters rallied in her support.

Manning said these papers would tell prosecutors everything they needed to know, adding: "I've given voluminous testimony; I've given voluminous information".

She said she opposes the grand-jury system as a matter of principle.

Prosecutors in Alexandria have always been investigating Wikileaks.

"Chelsea is a tremendously courageous person, and this outcome was not unexpected but this an appealable order", her lawyer, Moira Meltzer-Cohen, said after the hearing.

Today, a judge in Virginia ordered her jailed and held in contempt of the court for refusing to testify in a sealed grand jury case.

McCormick said Manning could avoid going to jail by simply testifying.

Chelsea Manning was in custody Friday. In 2017, then-outgoing US President Barack Obama commuted her sentence after she had served seven years. Ms. Manning could change her mind right now and do so.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was allegedly charged past year, though what he was charged with is unknown since it's under seal, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Slamming what he described as the "invisible deliberations" of USA grand juries to punish dissenters, he pointed the finger at America's "alleged rules of law" and warned that "there may be no legal justification for the latest action against Chelsea Manning". She said Manning's one-bedroom apartment would be a sufficient manner of confinement.
