Brexit vote: Only 40 MPs won over by assurances

Brexit vote: Only 40 MPs won over by assurances”

"If this deal narrowly scrapes through tonight - I don't think it will - we believe the option should be to go back to the people for a confirmatory vote on it", Corbyn said, suggesting there is little sign that Labour will reactivate the idea soon.

MPs voted by 391 to 242 against the deal, despite the Prime Minister's assurance that new agreements reached with Jean-Claude Juncker in Strasbourg would ensure the United Kingdom can not be trapped in the controversial backstop arrangement indefinitely.

A British lawmaker who had proposed a vote to rule out a no-deal Brexit in any scenario is no longer backing the amendment, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

Theresa May has been described as a "rabbit in the headlights", too frightened of Brexiteers in her party to really say how bad no-deal would be for country, according to a Labour MP.

She had been dealt a major blow when attorney-general Geoffrey Cox said in his official legal advice that the assurances did not remove the risk of the United Kingdom being trapped indefinitely in the backstop arrangements.

Mrs May said MPs would have to decide whether they want to delay Brexit, hold another referendum, or whether they "want to leave with a deal but not this deal".

Brexit was plunged into fresh turmoil yesterday after Parliament buried Prime Minister Theresa May's amended deal in a 149 vote majority.

She said she was "not frightened" of the people in her Birmingham Yardley constituency who voted to leave, saying if they do not like her views they can vote her out.

Under the no deal plan revealed this morning, 87 per cent of products would be subject to zero tariffs in an effort to stop price spikes and kick-start trade with Britain from across the world.

Battling against her ailment the Prime Minister made a statement after the result of the vote was read out, saying: "I continue to believe that by far the best outcome is the United Kingdom leaves the European Union in orderly fashion with a deal".

But ministers said products from the European Union including beef, pork, chicken, butter, cheese and fish would also be subject to import taxes expected to push up prices in the supermarkets from March 29 if there is no deal.

Mrs May declined to do so, sticking by her deal as the best way to Brexit, but added money had been made available for no-deal preparations.

She said: "No-deal is considered by most businesses to be a deeply damaging outcome for the United Kingdom economy".

Boris Johnson is among leadership candidates sizing up their chances.
