Victims killed, injured during school shooting in Brazil

- A shooting at a school near Sao Paulo on Wednesday left several people dead, police sources said, with initial reports putting the death toll as high as ten, including two shooters.

The identities of the victims and the alleged attackers - who were said to be former students at the school aged between 20 and 25 - have not yet been released.

Military police Colonel Marcelo Sales said two assailants burst into the school grounds in the early morning, armed with a.38 caliber revolver and a "medieval weapon that looked like a bow and arrows". Nine others were wounded in the school attack and hospitalized, he said.

Despite Brazil being one of the world's most violent countries, school shootings are rare.

Brazil's new President Jair Bolsonaro recently announced that gun ownership controls would be loosened.

Gun laws are extremely strict in Brazil, but it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon.

The attackers targeted the Professor Raul Brasil state school in Suzano, near the city of Sao Paulo. He immediately pulled a pistol out of his jeans and shot into a group of eight students, hitting at least two, who dropped to the floor.

Castro entered the school a few seconds later and put a crossbow and backpack on the floor. The motive for the shooting is not clear, police said.

Only secondary students were reportedly at the school at the time of the shooting. Local media reported that they turned their weapons on themselves after killing at least five students and an adult.

Crime scene photographs released by police show Monteiro, his head lying in a pool of blood, dressed in black with a machete tucked in his trousers.

"The teenagers were brutally murdered", São Paulo state governor João Doria said after visiting the school.

"It's a very sad scene, the saddest thing I've seen in my entire life".
