Former senior public security official expelled from CPC, office”

Meng Hongwei, former president of Interpol, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and stripped of his administrative positions after an official investigation, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Meng, who served as the vice minister of public security, vanished in September past year during a visit to China from France, and was later accused of accepting bribes.

The anti-graft body said Meng Hongwei had "refused to enact decisions of the party centre" and abused his power for private gain.

The statement said Meng abused his power to satisfy his family's "extravagant lifestyle", indulging his wife's use of his authority for personal benefit.

After Interpol, an worldwide organization facilitating police cooperation across borders which is headquartered in Lyon, France, requested information from the Chinese government, the authorities said he had been detained in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption.

The case has been handed over to the state prosecutor's office, and his "illegal income" has been confiscated, it added.

On October 6, Interpol issued a request to the Chinese government for information on Meng's whereabouts and the CCDI replied the following day, saying he had been detained in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption.

During press interviews previous year, Grace spoke out against the secretive nature of China's anti-corruption campaign and called on Chinese authorities to release more details on the whereabouts and condition of her husband.

His wife, Grace Meng, told French television on Sunday that she had written to seek the help of French President Emmanuel Macron on the eve of a visit by his counterpart Xi Jinping, who has now returned to Beijing.

In a statement about Meng soon after his disappearance, Public Security Minister Zhao Kezhi said the authorities would "firmly and thoroughly eradicate pernicious influence from Zhou Yongkang", an ominous sign.

Zhou and other senior figures prosecuted in Xi's anti-corruption crackdown were mostly convicted of corruption but officials have since also said they were accused of "conspiring openly to usurp party leadership".

Fearing for her own as well as her children's lives, Grace Meng has applied for asylum in France and is under protection by the French police.
