Prince William will visit Christchurch to honour mosque shooting victims

Prince William will visit Christchurch to honour mosque shooting victims”

The palace released a statement on Wednesday informing that William will make the trip on behalf of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, in late April at the request of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

"Inspired as it was by hatred, those actions were created to divide us and tear us apart", she said.

Facebook's ban was a shift in policy after criticism by civil rights groups that it was failing to confront extremism.

Farid Ahmed, a survivor of the first mosque attack, was welcomed to sustained applause.

"They were stories of bravery".

"I may be from one culture, you may come from another culture, I may have one faith, you may have one faith, but together we are a lovely garden", Ahmed said.

"I'm very positive about this continuing", said Manan Bohra, who runs a Muslim community centre in Auckland.

"Although our eyes shed tears and our hearts mourn, we know they are at peace", said Shaggaf Khan, President of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, who was "immensely grateful" for the solidarity and response, and was hopeful, ultimately. "Prayer is supposed to be about love and peace".

It was at this mosque that the chief suspect, now in custody and charged with murder, began to broadcast his initial act of terrorism to an worldwide audience, gunning down worshipers - men, women and children - attending Friday prayers.

Looking frail in his wheelchair as he sat on stage wearing sunglasses and a headscarf, Ahmed said he bore no hatred toward the accused gunman, Australian Brenton Tarrant. Morrison later told reporters the service "was a thing of absolute beauty".

Prince William joined NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on a panel at the World Economic Forum meeting in January.

Morrison said he has been working closely with Ardern to look at issues such as gun laws and blocking hate-filled content on social media.

New Zealand's police force put on a show of force, closing down nearby streets and patrolling the park with semi-automatic weapons. A helicopter circled the event and police commissioner Mike Bush called it one of the largest security operations in New Zealand history.

Jioji Konrote will be among the hundreds of foreign delegates attending the service at Hagley Park in Christchurch, New Zealand. Muslim volunteers, some of whom had travelled from Australia and Asia, handed out pamphlets with information about Islam as crowds left the park after the service.

The service was attended by residents, relatives, politicians and other public figures.

"Let's keep leading the way", he said.
